The medical outreach which formed part of GHANBATT 7's Civil Military Coordination (CIMIC) activities was aimed at uplifting the health status and social well- being of the inmates.
A statement issued to the Ghana News Agency by Sub Lieutenant Ako Nai, Press and Information Officer of the Ghanaian Battalion in South Sudan said, about 130 inmates and guards were screened and administered medication for blood pressures, blood glucose, malaria, height and weight.
The statement said Lt Col Antwi Awuah Darkwa, the Commanding Officer of the GHANBATT, in an interaction with the inmates encouraged them to take advantage of the correctional facility they find themselves in to reform their lives.
He added that being detained in a prison was not the end of the world and encouraged them to look up to the former South African President, the late Nelson Mandela who came from prison and rose to become a president and one of the greatest world leaders.
The statement said Capt Jaspah Eric Mawusi, the CIMIC Officer explained that prisoners in situations like this do not normally get the medical attention they deserved hence the decision to assist the inmates of the Bentiu Prisons.
He added that, he was convinced that the impact the outreach would leave on the inmates would be perpetual as some of them have not had medical attention for long time.
Major Richard Kwaku Owusu, the Senior Medical Officer revealed that most of the inmates suffered from musco-skeletal pains and a high number of them suffered from scabies and worm infestation.
He said this discovery would inform the medical team in their approach in subsequent medical outreaches.
The Acting Director of the Bentiu Central Prison, Major General Yoanis Orac Tipo expressed his gratitude to GHANBATT for their initiative to help the inmates with their medical conditions.
He appealed to GHANBATT to frequently support them with medical supplies to enable them treat minor cases at the prison.
