Chindere (O/R), May 15, GNA - Nana Obrimpong Kanya, the Paramount Chief of Nchumuru Traditional Area in the Oti Region, said government must empower institutions tasked to fight corruption to ensure rapid socioeconomic development.
He said the institutions needed to be well resourced to uphold the rule of law, transparency and accountability to prevent corruption and to maintain the positive reputation of the nation as the beacon of democracy.
"Ghana’s democratic credentials are highly appreciated globally. We must join hands to thank God for peace in the country as a result of good governance under our leaders. Let us continue to pray and observe the rule of law, transparency in our administrative structures, accountability, probity and integrity of leadership," he said.
Nana Kanya was addressing a grand durbar to climax the 2019 Tora Asunke Festival of the Nchumurus at Chindere in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region.
It was on the theme: "Indiscipline is a Challenge to Stabilisation of Democracy in Ghana".
Nana Kanya said political activities must be marked by discipline to help prevent vigilantism, which was becoming a threat to Ghana’s peace and democracy.
"Saboteurs of the country's economy must be made to face the full rigours of the law," he said, and called on the people to participate fully in the local governance process.
The Paramount Chief commended government for the creation of the new regions and called on the people to work hard to bridge the development gap.
He said the Free Senior High School Policy and other interventions to enhance the lots of the populace were commendable and must be supported by successive governments.
The Paramount Chief advised parents to show more interest in the education of their children and protect young girls from early marriages and teenage pregnancies.
He expressed concern about the deplorable state of basic schools in the area and the lack of teachers and called on government for support.
Nana Kanya called on government to turn its attention to roads in the District to open up the area for rapid development.
The Paramount Chief reportedly mobilised the locals to construct roads, his palace and other community projects through communal labour.
Mr Kofi Dzamesi, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, who led a government delegation, supported the celebration with a cash amount of GHC5000.00 and implored the people to take advantage of flagship policies and programmes of the Government.
The Tora Asunke (end of maltreatment) Festival is held annually to commemorate the freedom the Nchumurus won from the people of Asante Juaben.
The Nchumurus were said to be serving Asante Juaben as slaves in the Ashanti Eastern Province between the periods of 1760 to 1874 when they fought for their freedom under the leadership of Obofo Adu.
