Kumasi, May 10. GNA – The United Kingdom (UK) has pledged its commitment to strengthen ties with the Asante kingdom through various investment initiatives.
Mr Tom Hartley, UK’s Deputy High Commissioner to Ghana, speaking at a ceremony to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the British Council and the Otumfuo Charity Foundation said the UK was committed to support and deepen the bond of relationship between the people of UK and Asanteman.
The Foundation would promote education, art and culture for the benefit of the two countries.
Mr Hartley said the UK, through the British Council had over the years sought to develop and improve relations between UK and Ghana through cultural and educational exchanges, technical, professional as well as personal development programmes.
British Councils, through the “Jobs for the Youth Project”, was currently working with some selected business enterprises in Kumasi to train, incubate and build the capacities of small and medium scale enterprises in order to help them grow and expand to generate employment for young people.
Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku, Executive Director of the Otumfuo Charity Foundation, said the objective of the Foundation was to promote and support quality education, health care delivery, provision of potable water and good sanitation.
It also seeks to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Asante kingdom.
Lady Julia Osei Tutu, Patron of the Foundation, narrated the historical and cultural ties that existed between the UK and Asanteman and said the signing of the MOU would further strengthen and build on the existing friendship to promote development among the two countries.
