Ho, May 10, GNA - This year's Tora Asunke (end of humiliation) festival of the people of Nchumuru in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region aims at raising funds for a community centre project.
This year's celebration also marks the golden jubilee of the reign of Nana Obrimpong Kanya II, Paramount Chief of Nchumuru Traditional Area.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is expected to grace the grand durbar, scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday May 11, at Nchumuru.
The people of Krachi Nchumuru settled at their present location as early as the 16th century, and the festival is celebrated annually to commemorate the defeat over Asante Juaben in 1874, which ended years of servitude.
This year’s festival is on the theme "Indiscipline is a Challenge to the Stabilisation of Democracy in Ghana”, and started on Thursday May 09 with soccer matches and other sporting activities.
Nana Kanya would sit in state on Friday and the day would also witness warrior groups visiting ancestral graves to perform some purification rites.
Mr Daniel Asafoatse Dio, Head of the Festival Planning Committee, told the Ghana News Agency that the community centre would enhance community mobilisation, and added that proceeds from the festival would also be channelled into addressing water, health and sanitation challenges in the area.
Mr Dio also said the event would be used to draw the attention of stakeholders to the state of roads in the area, which affected the livelihood of over 80,000 population.
The festival is expected to attract chiefs from the traditional area and its neighbouring towns, government officials, residents living in the diaspora and tourists.
