Kumasi, April 30, GNA – The Reverend Benson Osafo Kantanka, Chairperson of the Asante Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has called on religious organisations to initiate comprehensive skills training programmes for the youth.
This he said would provide them with employable skills and better future.
He said the youth needed a clear- cut future direction and empowerment to be able to live a meaningful life and cater for themselves, their families and society, while contributing to national development.
Speaking at the 97th Asante Presbytery Session in Kumasi, Rev. Osafo Kantanka, pointed out that the youth without direction and empowerment could easily misdirect their exuberance.
It was therefore, important especially for the church to initiate pragmatic strategies that would empower “these young ones to become entrepreneurs or further their education so that they can have sources of income to sustain themselves”.
The Session which was held on the theme “Go and Make Disciples of All Nations”, seeks to take stock of past performances of the presbytery and deliberate on issues that affect the growth and development of the church and find ways to address them.
Rev. Osafo Kantanka, said lack of gainful employment and effective engagement of the youth led to unhealthy lifestyles and the emerging negative social vices such as vigilantism, robbery, kidnapping, rituals killings and “sakawa” among the youth.
He said the church should be at the frontline and not to be side-tracked by the growing challenges in the country, adding “it is the church that ought to show the way and respond to the rare needs of people, to salvage the growing rates of immoral acts in society.
On the mission statement of the Church and the Presbytery, the Chairperson pledged to lead members and re-double efforts by registering its presence in every village throughout the presbytery.
Rev Osafo Kantaka said a multi-sectional committee would be put in place to work out sustainable strategies to collaborate with the missions and evangelism departments of the presbytery to see to the planting of branches of the church in all the villages in the presbytery.
He stressed the need to strengthen the church’s and community relationships to help impact positively on members in the communities.
