Kumasi, April 25, GNA - A total of 170 water meter theft cases have since January, this year, been recorded in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Sampson Ampah, Communications Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), has disclosed.
Twenty-three (23) of those meters, he said, were stolen at Konongo in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality, while the others were taken at different locations.
“We have been receiving reports of stolen meters from our customers on daily basis,” Mr. Ampah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.
The Communications Manager hinted that three people were recently, arrested and prosecuted for their involvement in separate water meter theft cases.
He mentioned them as; Stephen Kumi, 24, who was jailed nine months by the Akropong District Court for stealing , Ali Zakari, 27, sentenced to one year imprisonment in hard labour by the Asokwa District Court ‘Three’ for stealing and causing damage to government property, and Suleman Mumuni, 20, jailed nine months by the Asokwa District Court ‘Two’ for stealing.
Mr Ampah advised customers of the GWCL to be vigilant and assist the authorities to flush out such miscreants in the society since the meters were critical in their billing system.
He assured that the Company would not relent in tightening its monitoring system to arrest potential meter thieves.
