Tema, April 24, GNA - The Thai Union Europe, managers of Pioneer Food Cannery, has held a free health screening exercise for residents of Tema Newtown as part of activities to kick start its 2019 Safety Week celebrations.
Over 200 residents were examined by medical officers from C&J Medics for hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, as well as received medical advice.
The three-day safety week celebration is on the theme, ‘Zero Accident, Y3 do wo papa, wonkwan hu hia’ to wit, ‘we love you and your life matters’.
The Safety week celebration is aimed at creating the awareness of taking safety issues seriously at the work place as well as within the communities.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Vida Botwe, Head of Human Resource, Thai Union Ghana, stated that, safety of workers and customers was very important to the company as business would not flourish without good health.
Mrs. Botwe explained that, since 1972 that Pioneer Food Cannery began operations in the country, they had ensured and maintained the needed health and safety measures.
Mr. Samuel Kisi Boateng, Manager in charge of Employee Relations, revealed that, Pioneer Food Cannery as part of its corporate social responsibility reached out to residents in the communities to have them screened.
Mr Boateng said many people were living with some ailments which they were not aware of therefore the health screening afforded them the opportunity to be in the known adding that ‘it’s good to know your health status’.
Mr. Boateng added that, strengthening the relationship between employees and customers was very key to the growth and sustainability of every corporate organization.
Mrs. Adiza Ibrahim, trader at Tema-Newtown, expressed great joy and thanked the organizers after she got screened saying she wished they did it often.
The Pioneer Food Cannery Limited, producers of starkest tuna, John West and other products, which started operating in Tema in 1972, is now under the management of Thai Union Europe.
