Kumasi, April 24, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), is to probe circumstances that led to fire outbreaks at the Central and Asafo Markets in Kumasi during the Easter festivities.
Property, running into several thousands of Ghana Cedis, got burnt in the inferno, leaving many traders distressed by the huge losses incurred.
“The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is perplexed at the magnitude of the fire outbreaks.
“We have, therefore, referred the issue to the REGSEC to initiate a probe into the circumstances leading to the incidence,” Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief (MCE), told the media in Kumasi.
This was after he led a delegation to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire outbreaks at the two markets.
For two consecutive days, the Asafo Market, for instance, was engulfed in fire, ravaging about two hundred stores.
It took firefighters a hell of time before they were able to subdue the blaze.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi said the Assembly would give the support to the affected traders as they strived to recover from the trauma of the losses incurred due to the incidence and lauded the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for their resilience and swift response to those emergencies.
In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Police Command, has denied media reports that 33 suspects were apprehended in connection with the fire outbreaks.
“For now, we have not made any arrest in the course of our investigations,” Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Ahianyo, of the Police Public Relations Office, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
The police, he said, would come out at the appropriate time to brief the public on the findings of their investigations.
