Accra, March 25, GNA - Mr Albert Nukpezah, Technical Director for the Kwahu Easter Mountain Marathon (KEMM), has warned athletes to avoid using short-cut routes in the upcoming race,
He said the competitions would meet international standard for marathons, hence measures have been put in place to prevent cases of cheating in KEMM.
Mr Nukpezah was speaking in an interview with the media, after supervising the measurement of the 42.195 kilometers.
He said, there were a lot of international athletes coming to Ghana for the competition and therefore, it was important for the organisers to be strict on the rules to prevent cheating.
He said all designated routes, would have competition officials who would be at vantage points to issue out special ribbons to athletes and also direct them on the right routes to use.
“We don’t want cheating in the competition, so for the routes we have people who would give ribbons to athletes and show them where to pass. So those athletes who would have a particular number of ribbons on their wrists would be accepted after crossing the finishing line,” he said.
He said, he was confidence of an improved performance from athletes in this year’s edition because the level of interest has shot up significantly.
Over 1,000 athletes are expected to compete in the 42.195 kilometer marathon with three winners in both the male and female categories having the chance to compete in an international marathon later in the year.
This year's Marathon would be the second edition and it is slated for April 20, 2019.
Participants would compete for a total prize package of GHC 20,000 and this would include electrical gadgets, products from sponsors and an opportunity to participate in international marathons.
