Hohoe (V/R), March 23, GNA - Work has started on the construction of a 2,000 capacity sports stadium and recreational centre in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta region.
The facility is expected to be completed in seven months and help uncover and grow talents in the Municipality, Mr John Peter Amewu, Minister for Energy said at a short sod cutting ceremony.
Mr Amewu commended traditional authorities in the area for supporting the project and hopeful it would open up the area for rapid development.
Nana Antwi, General Manager of Wembley Sports Construction Company Limited said the Company would use the World's Football governing body, FIFA's preferred artificial grass known as astro turf and promised to deliver a world class and state-of-the-art facility.
He said the facility when completed would consist of a football pitch with a dimension of 105m x 68m, flood lights, tennis and volley ball courts, playing grounds for children and a place for religious and traditional activities.
Nana Antwi said the project would engage local labour to create jobs for the people.
Mr Andrews Teddy Ofori, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive asked young people in the Municipality to make good use of the facility.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency(GNA), Alhaji Kamaru, a Municipal Sports Coordinator and Coach of Volta Green FC, a division two league club said the lack of a standardized football pitch had hindered most sports development in the area.
