Tuobodom (Bono East), March 22, GNA – More than 70 people are feared dead in a fatal accident which occurred on the Techiman-Kintampo Highway in the newly-created Bono East Region in the early hours of Friday.
The accident occurred around 0100 hours when two buses, a Grandbird with registration number GT 5694-18 traveling from Garu to Kumasi and a VIP bus with registration number GT 3916-17 which was travelling from Accra to Bolgatanga collided head-on.
Ghana News Agency (GNA) investigations revealed that the accident happened at “Watchman”, a farming settlement along the highway between Tuobodom and Jema and because of the impact of the crash, the Grandbird Bus caught fire and burnt beyond recognition.
When the GNA visited the scene 0600 hours Police and the Ghana National Fire Service had arrived and assisting to pull out survivors, but some of the charred bodies were stuck under the bus.
Both buses were lying at the shoulders of the highway and some of the injured have since been sent to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital and the Jema Government Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have also been deposited at the mortuaries of the two hospitals.
Mr Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Head of the National Road Safety Commission, told the GNA that human error particularly over-speeding and wrongful overtaking remained major contributory factors to road accidents on that particular stretch.
