Accra, March 21, GNA - The Leadership of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) has organised free health screening for 1,000 residents of Nungua in Accra.
The health screening, which included blood donation, was to collect 300 pints of blood to boost supply at the country’s blood banks.
Mr Dikwal Emmanuel Maclean, the SRC President, told the Ghana News Agency that the initiative was part of efforts by the SRC to support the residents, who could not afford medical care to check their health status.
He said beneficiaries were screened for basic illnesses such as blood pressure, hypertension, hepatitis, and malaria as well as weight.
Mr Maclean said over the years, the leadership of the SRC has organised these exercises for students but decided to extend it to the Nungua community, as a form of giving back to society.
He said the outreach allowed many of the residents to check their health status and get the medical team to educate them on their health and other hygienic practices.
He said going forward, the exercises would be organised on Independence Day to give back to society, within which the University was situated.
The SRC President advised both students and residents to take issues of their health seriously and endeavour to make regular check-up to know their health status.
Mr Maclean said in the coming days, the SRC would organise a Maritime exposition to create the opportunity for students to interact with industry players on the challenges or gaps that existed between academia and industry.
He said the leadership decided to come up with this initiative, where players in the industry would bring out their challenges and for the students to provide the necessary solutions to them.
"A forum will then be organised where solutions to the questions will be presented by the students,” he added.
He said this would create an opportunity for industry and academia to interact and find lasting solutions to some of the problems affecting the Maritime sector.
Ms Matilda Gyamfi, a Representative from the Ministry of Health, said it is necessary to regularly check individual’s health status.
She urged residents to maintain healthy lifestyles by exercising regularly and adopting good eating habits.
