Takoradi, March 20, GNA - Dr Jacob Mahama, the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service says the Effia-nkwanta hospital, the only referral facility in the Region continues to battle with attracting new doctors to facility.
He said financial clearance was given to 17 newly qualified medical officers posted to the region but only six turned up for interviews.
Dr. Mahama explained that out of the six, only two were communicating with the Regional Director but were indecisive of their joining the Regional Referral Hospital.
He said though the hospital lacked specialists, they also had to replace the three surgeons who were transferred on disciplinary grounds, adding that, at the moment management at the hospital have been replaced by the Council to reinvigorate the centre to function effectively.
Dr. Mahama said, “We are still drawing the Council and the Minister of Health's attention to the need to revamp the regional hospital".
Effia-Nkwanta Hospital is on fire and we need a face-lift. Roofs are leaking, windows of wards are rusted that they cannot even be closed, rooms lack ventilations and our elevators are also not working”, he added.
The Regional Director mentioned the lack of adequate space in all department, obsolete instruments in the theatre and procedure rooms have contributed greatly to the disinterest of medical officers accepting posting to the facility.
He appealed to stakeholders to support the facility with the needed human resources and logistics to make the facility a true referral hospital.
