Wa, March 19, GNA – A Wa High Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye has granted bail to two persons accused of murder, and have been on remand for between 17 and 19 months without trial.
The pair, were each granted GH¢10,000.00 bail with two sureties.
They are also to report to the police every Monday beginning from 18th March 2019.
The bail followed an application filed by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
Mr Siddique Ubeidu, the Upper West Regional Director of CHRAJ, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the Commission acted in accordance with Article 218 (D) (III) and 229 of the 1992 constitution.
These Articles mandate the Commissioner to bring an application before any court for a remedy to secure the termination of any offending action or conduct that violated the fundamental human rights of any person.
Mr Ubeidu said the cases of the two, came to the notice of Commission when it led a team of investigators to the Wa Central Prisons as part of its routine exercise of inspecting detention centres and situation of remand prisoners.
The exercise apart from ensuring that the fundamental human rights of prisoners are not violated is also helping to decongest the prisons.
