Paga (U/E), March 17, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Kassena-Nankana West District has sensitized personnel of the Ghana Police Service on good governance, accountability and the rule of law.
The awareness creation effort also deliberated on the need for public office holders to refrain from corruption.
The Accountability, Rule of Law, and Anti-Corruption Programme (ARAP) forms part of the second phase activities outlined by the NCCE to educate members of the public on good governance with the objective to reduce corruption and improve on public place sanity and compliance with the law.
As part of the campaign, the Commission undertook similar sensitization activities for the informal sector including identifiable groups such as traders, artisans, women groups, traditional authorities and the youth among others with messages to empower them to demand accountability from duty bearers as well as encourage them to eschew corruption.
The sensitization of the Police, was also aimed at improving their visibility in fighting corruption, and to improve on their image as some have been tagged as corrupt.
Mr Robert Dampare, Paga District Director of the NCCE, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the training, said the role of the police in responding to corruption was key and their responsibility to the citizenry could not be undermined.
He said the programme would enhance knowledge on ARAP and gather opinions on challenges and ways to push for accountable governance.
The police personnel were also schooled on responsibility of the citizenry in the fight against corruption, the Whistle Blower Act and the role of key state institutions in the fight against corruption.
Some of the views expressed by the participants pointed to some lapses in the laws, especially those that do not have wider acceptance by members of the public, because the people at the grassroots were not aware of them or did not participate in their formulation.
The participants said political interferences in cases reported to the police, misuse of public property by public office holders, especially vehicles were some of the corrupt acts that ought to be stamped out.
They said corruption in workplaces as well as politicians offering jobs to card bearing members of their parties were other instances of corrupt acts
