Garu (UE) March 15, GNA - Mr Albert Alalzuuga Akoka, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Garu Constituency in the Garu District of the Upper East Region has supported 4,200 public and private Junior High School students with teaching and learning materials.
Mr Akoka donated mathematical sets to third year students preparing for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and exercise books to the second and first year students to aid them in conducting their class assignments.
Mr Akoka presenting the items to the Worikambo Catholic Junior High School said so far, about 23 Junior High Schools had received the items and that, about 36 schools were expected to benefit from the gift.
Mr Akoka noted that the purpose for the donation was in response to a survey carried out by his office to find out about the needs of the pupils in the area, which revealed that most of the students, especially the candidates could not afford these educational materials and so there was the need for him to intervene.
He hinted that the support formed part of his share of the MPs’ Common Fund and said supporting basic education was part of his priorities to improve on basic education in the area.
The MP stated that as part of efforts to improve on basic education in the area, he planned to institute best BECE performed school and best student awards scheme to award deserving schools and pupils.
The MP urged the students to be more focused on their studies and avoid unnecessary activities such as funerals at night, truancy, and roaming unnecessarily, adding that, such behaviour would retard their progress.
Mr Simon Dinko, the Parent Teacher Association Chairman for the Worikambo Catholic Junior High School who received the materials on behalf of the head teacher, commended the MP for the support and said the materials had come at a time when the students needed the support most to prepare for their exams.
Mr Dinko noted that the support had lifted some burden from parents as most parents could not afford to buy such materials for their wards, and called on other well-endowed citizens from the area to emulate the gesture of the MP to help lift the falling standards of basic education in the area.
