Bongo (UE), March 15, GNA – TEERE, a local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has handed over medical supplies, equipment and furniture worth €500,000 to the Bongo District Hospital to help raise the quality of health care delivery.
The donation was in response to the appeal for assistance made on behalf of the facility by the Bongo community.
This was during the TEERE’s Local Government Forum (TLGF) programme organized at both district and regional levels in the Upper East Region.
The items were bought with funds from the International Children Help (ICH) and Senior Expert Services (SES), two Germany-based NGOs.
These included 66 beds and equal number of tables, 50 cabinets, 118 chairs, 25 bedside lockers, ultrasound, chest drawers, respirators, and electrocardiogram.
This was the second time in two years that TEERE was supporting the hospital.
Handing over the items to the management of the hospital at a ceremony, Professor Ephraim Nsoh Avea, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NGO, said a German philanthropist, Ernst Knapp, paid the bill for transporting them to Bongo.
He expressed confidence that they would significantly help to address the challenges the hospital had been struggling with.
He announced plans by SES to train – build the capacity of the health professionals and management to improve the quality of care and properly maintain the equipment.
Prof Avea pledged his NGO’s unswerving determination to continue to partner – work closely with other organizations to bring development and make things better for the people.
Dr William Gudu, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, thanked TEERE and its partners, ICH and SES, for the gift.
He promised to use them for the purpose for which they were meant to serve, to benefit the patients.
The facility, which was upgraded into a district hospital in 1996, had not much infrastructural development over the years, something he described as a worrying – unhelpful to quality health care delivery.
It has been handling referral cases from six other health centres in the district.
Dr Gudu said the gesture would significantly address some of the challenges confronting them, adding that, the lack beds at Children’s Ward, was going to be effectively over.
Madam Paulina Patience Abayage, the Upper East Regional Minister, receiving the donation on behalf of management of the hospital, said the gesture was a welcomed relief.
It was probably the biggest donation to have ever been received by any institution in the region.
She reminded the management of the facility to go the extra mile to make sure that the equipment were kept in good shape at all times.
She gave high marks to TEERE and its partners for the good job they were doing to improve health care in the district.
The health workers were also given thumps up for their professionalism.
For four years running, the hospital has recorded zero maternal deaths.
Mr Gerhard Lauth, Senior Expert of SES, said they collaborated with TEERE on numerous occasions and would be sustained to help transform the lives of the population.
He appealed to the authorities to reconsider the clearance levy at the ports to allow for smooth passage of the goods into the country.
