Support girls to acquire tertiary education, businesswoman entreats parents

Sunyani, Feb. 12, GNA – A businesswoman in Sunyani, Mrs. Vivian Quansah, has entreated parents and guardians to give the necessary support to their adolescent girl-children to enable them to further their education to the tertiary level.

She observed that the percentage of females pursuing education at the tertiary level was relatively smaller than their male counterparts, saying, it had been the trend nationwide over the years.

Mrs Quansah who is a pharmaceutical shop operator and also an unofficial mentor of young girls gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the need for increased number of female acquisition of tertiary education in Sunyani.

According to Mrs Quansah, if more girls gained admission to the tertiary level, the nation would get more women with the necessary knowledge and skills in various fields of academic and professional disciplines to contribute efficiently towards national development.

Hence, the onus was on parents and guardians to give proper moral training to their children and wards as the springboard pushed them to attain not only highest but quality education.

Mrs. Quansah identified some factors and societal influences that sometimes impeded girls from acquiring education beyond the Senior High School (SHS) level, citing that teenage pregnancy had been one of such hindrances, especially in the rural communities.

She insisted that the situation demanded proper training and effective supervision of parents and guardians in collaboration with teachers, particularly at the basic and SHS levels to ensure that the pupils and students would not engage in promiscuity and other social vices but seriously concentrate on their studies.

Mrs Quansah applauded government for the introduction of the Free SHS Programme, saying, that had offered a window of opportunity for every Ghanaian child to be educated at least to the second cycle level.

She urged parents and guardians to support their children and wards to attain quality basic education to enable them benefit from the Free SHS Programme and move to the next level.
