Children urged to develop keen interest in education

Asokore (Ash), March 12, GNA - Susubribi Krobea Asante, Paramount Chief of the Asante Asokore Traditional Area, has called on school children to develop a keen interest in their education since this was the surest way to guarantee a prosperous and meaningful life in future.

He also urged parents to pay much attention to the welfare and the academic performance of their children.

Susubribi Krobea Asante made the call at a multi-stakeholder forum organized by Nana S.K Foundation at Asokore in the Sekyere East District.

The forum served as a platform to discuss the role of parents in protecting and ensuring the welfare of their children and also seek ways to address the declining performance of pupils in schools in the Asokore Traditional Area.

Making reference to available statistics in the results for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the District, Mr David Oppong, the District Director of Education, said this showed a declining trend from 2016-2018.

The overall percentage scores dropped from 69 per cent in 2016 to 63 in 2017 and 55 in 2018, he said.

Mr Oppong said there is the need for parents to do more to ensure that their children are given every encouragement to perform well at school to help improve the situation.

The District Director further called on parents and School Management Committees (SMCs), to coordinate and strengthen efforts with the GES in order to help improve the academic performance of their wards.

Mr Awale Mohammed Hamid, District Social Welfare Director, urged parents to always make the protection and welfare of their children their paramount responsibility.

He said parental responsibility was not only key to the development of the child but also important in ensuring their educational success.

Mr Hamid blamed the increasing child delinquency, drug abuse and other social vices among children in society on the lack of effective parental care and control.

Children, he said, were mostly naive on many social issues, needed consistent support and guidance from parents and other key stakeholders such as teachers, government child welfare agencies, Civil Society Organizations, among others, to secure their successful future.

Mr Andrews Gyimah Mintah, the CEO of the Nana S.K. Foundation, urged stakeholders to contribute their quota to aid in the improvement of child protection and academic performance in the area.

The event brought together the chiefs and elders of the traditional area, religious groups, members of the District Assembly and other stakeholders.
