Agona Swedru, March 11, GNA – After school hours, the classrooms of Swedru AME Zion (B) Basic School at Agona Swedru have been turned into a makeshift hotel by some miscreants and this has become a serious threat to effective teaching and learning.
Mr Samuel Dickson, Headteacher of the School, said this when he addressed the first Anniversary celebration of the Schools’ Old Students Association at Swedru in the Central Region.
He said teachers and pupils come to school each morning to see scattered used condoms thrown around the classrooms, verandas and the compound.
Mr Dickson said due to the absence of security, wee smokers have also been using the school as their base as they come after school hours to smoke wee and undertake other despicable activities.
He said the school cannot afford the services of a security personnel to guard against the emerging situation.
Mr Dickson said another issue of great concern was a cattle ranch sited close to the school and herdsmen are daily seen sending the animals for pasturing during school hours and this disrupts the attention of the students during school hours.
He said reports have been made to the Environmental Health and Sanitation office of the Agona West Municipal Assembly but the appropriate response is yet to be made on the situation.
The Headteacher said the school built in 1955 has never been renovated and urged the old students to assist in developing the infrastructure of the school.
Mr Lawrence Arthur, an old boy of the school, appealed to the Agona West Municipal Assembly to support education in the municipality, adding that the large number of children who were out of school was alarming.
He called on the teachers to develop the talents of pupils and urged parents to ensure that they assist teachers to build the character of their children for them to become responsible adults.
Nana Amoani Otabil, Chairman of the AME Zion Basic School Old Students Association, said their aim is to assist their alma mater to become a deserving role model.
He said since it’s inception last year, the Association has presented 100 bags of cement to AME Zion Church for the construction of urinal and other structures for the school.
He urged the students to take advantage of the free senior High School (SHS) policy to study hard adding that the policy has come to lessen the financial burden of many parents.
