Accra, March 11, GNA - Madam Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff, on Monday, commended the Ministry of Information (MOI) for transforming its press centre to meet international standards for the dissemination information to the citizenry.
“The Ministry is now vibrant, and I look forward to seeing the transformation of the Information Service Department (ISD) with their vans to disseminate government policies and programmes to the underserved communities to decentralise governance structure”.
The Chief of Staff was commissioning the facility at the Ministry, in Accra.
She said it was imperative for the ISD to be strengthened to have a stronger link with government programmes and policies to be able to effectively propagate the information to the populace for their better understanding of the governance system.
Madam Opare underscored the importance of information to national development, saying the Ministry played a key role in that and encouraged active public participation in national discourses.
“The Ministry and the ISD have, on the other hand, created awareness of programmes and public relations support to the government, hence the need to equip the centre with state-of-the art equipment to help them deliver on their mandate”.
Madam Opare, also a former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wougon, said the Centre would create and maintain sound media relationship and facilitate government activities for the public in an effective and efficient manner.
Building and managing relationship with the media, she noted, was quite a challenging task.
However, it was imperative to sustain mutual respect to advance the democratic credentials of the national governance structure.
Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Minister of Information, stated that creating a conducive environment for media activities was core to the Ministry’s mandate in deepening engagements for national interest.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the refurbishment was built on the foundations laid by Mr Fritz Baffour and Dr Mustapaha Abdul-Hamid, two of his predecessors, who recognised the immeasurable contribution of the media to nation building.
He said Government’s role was not to control the media but work in concert for building a vibrant, great and strong nation, adding that, it would continue to engage the media to achieve the desired fruitful relationship.
Mr Baffour, for his part, commended the Ministry for the achievement, and called for a united force in furtherance of the national developmental agenda.
Dr Abdul-Hamid said the initiative was a testimony of the Government’s commitment to advancing the “Ghana Beyond Aid” agenda, thus its financing of the Project.
Mr Pius Enam Hadzide, a Deputy Minister of MOI, Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, the Chairman of the National Media Commission and Mr Roland Affail Monney, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association were among the dignitaries at the event.
