Abutia Teti (V/R), March 11, GNA - Madam Beatrice Berkui, a Senior Tutor at the Ho Nurses Training College, has called for the creation of more breast cancer diagnosis centres and awareness activities to help prevent fatalities associated with the disease.
She said centres are needed to ensure that the disease did not pass undetected.
Madam Berkui said this during a community health education effort at Abutia Teti in the Ho Municipality.
The event was organised by the Assembly Member for the area to mark the International Women’s Day celebrations held under the on the theme: "Think Equal, Think Smart, And Be Innovative".
She said cancer affected 4000 women in Ghana in 2018 and that a change of attitudes towards the disease is necessary.
Madam Berkui said although cancer care is expensive, the disease presented enough symptoms to make way for early diagnosis, and must therefore be taken "seriously" with no compromise on seeking medical care at the slightest suspicion.
She used the event to provide for the women self diagnosis techniques and asked them to consider regular exercises and healthy diets in addition to frequent self examinations.
Madam Peace Berkui, Assembly Member for the area, said many women in the farming community were single parents who survived on sustenance farming and needed help to escape extreme poverty and diseases like breast cancer.
