Ho, Mar. 07, GNA - Public morgues in the Volta Region have been closed as part of a nationwide strike by mortuary attendants.
Checks by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicate that the facilities are neither receiving nor releasing bodies as the strike entered its third day.
Some relatives of deceased persons who were to be buried this weekend showed signs of uncertainty, and told the GNA at the Volta Regional Hospital morgue that it was impossible to move funeral dates as family members had already gathered, and all other preparations done.
Attendants at the Ho Municipal Hospital morgue, which was also under lock said the facility was only taking in "emergency cases" from the Hospital with some clients being turned away in the presence of the GNA.
Mr Anthony Amadotor, National Vice Chairman of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana and Manager of the Regional Hospital’s Morgue said series of stakeholder engagement were ongoing towards finding a solution to the impasse.
He said almost all of the over 200 bodies held at the morgue had been preserved and that steps had been taken to ensure that the strike posed no health challenges.
Dr John Tampouri, Medical Superintendent at the Volta Regional Hospital told the GNA the Hospital would have to contract undertakers to prepare bodies for burial if the situation persisted.
