Hohoe, March. 06, GNA - A total of 20 public and private basic schools and the Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School (HEPPS) participated in the 62nd independence anniversary parade in the Hohoe Municipality.
The parade, which was held at the Hohoe Sports Stadium had four contingents made up of one officer, 112 members from the HEPPS cadet corps, the Royal Rangers cadet corps, the Momo Army cadet and the mass band.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Ayiih, the Divisional Police Commander, Madam Gladys Amenya, Municipal Director of Education and Mr John Peter Amewu, Minister of Energy joined Mr. Andrews Teddy Ofori, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive to review the parade.
The Municipal Chief Executive who delivered the Independence Day address on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of peaceful co-existence irrespective of language and the need to preserve the environment, which necessitated the fight against illegal mining.
He congratulated the Gbi Kledzo Great Winners Basic School, Hohoe St. Joseph Preparatory School and Hohoe Beverly Hills Academy for scoring 100 per cent and first to third positions respectively in the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the District.
He said the Municipal Assembly would institute an award scheme in the year 2020 to award deserving students and schools in the Municipality and called for commitment from teachers.
Mr Ofori asked the Municipal Education Directorate to increase its oversight responsibilities on its staff, especially circuit supervisors and head teachers to ensure they justified government's financial commitment towards them.
Awards were given to schools that emerged winners in the march past.
The celebration was attended by religious and traditional rulers, heads and personnel of the various security services and the Ghana Ambulance Service.
