Tarkwa (W/R), March 6, GNA-A grand parade of school children, cardet corps and voluntary organisations has been held at the Tarkwa and Abosso park to commemorate the 62nd independence anniversary in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
They numbered 1,492 and were under the command of Senior Officer Peter Kin Amegashie of the Ghana Prisons Service.
Mr. Gilbert Kennedy Asmah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa Nsuaem and the Divisional Police Commander in Tarkwa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dennis Abade took the national salute.
The theme for this year's event was "Celebrating Peace and Unity".
Present at the colourful ceremony were security officers, traditional rulers, clergy, politicians and the general public.
Addressing the gathering, the MCE announced that government had released GHc320, 123.96 to the Municipal Education Directorate in Tarkwa Nsuaem as its allocation for the year 2018/2019 capitation grant.
He said they have also received 3,200 uniforms, 15,704 boxes of white chalk sticks, 5,186 boxes of coloured chalk sticks, 503 teachers’ books, 352 dictionaries for both primary and Junior High Schools and 66 pieces of school mapping digest as support from the government.
According to the MCE, aside the 13 schools benefiting from the school feeding programme, the government has included 18 more schools onto the programme.
Mr. Asmah said as a result of the increase, the total enrolment for beneficiary schools stood at 9,327 in the municipality.
He emphasised that the assembly's continuous sponsoring of the Municipal Mock Examination, Municipal best teacher award scheme for Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education for participants with the aim of enhancing quality education had yielded positive results.
The assembly presented 3,447 candidates in the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), out of which 2, 764 scored between aggregate 06 and 36 representing 80.5 percent, the MCE indicated.
Despite this achievement, he said 29 candidates comprising 14 boys and 15 girls were absent through the examination period.
Mr Asmah pleaded with teachers and parents to ensure that pupils who registered for the BECE stayed in school to write the final examination.
