Accra, Feb. 26, GNA - Selected students to receive the MILO President’s Independence Day Award on Tuesday toured the Tema Factory of Nestlé Ghana, a leading Nutrition Health and Wellness Company, to learn about the company’s production chain.
Numbering 24, the students had the opportunity to ask questions about the company’s operations and had a sense of what products fortified with key micronutrients such as Milo and Nido go through before getting onto dining tables.
Making a presentation during the visit, Mr George Semenyo, Human Resource Business Partner at the Nestlé Factory who took the students through the history of the company said Nestlé was established in 1867, by a German-born Pharmacist Henri Nestlé with launch of his farine lactee in Vevey Switzerland.
In Ghana, he explained that the company started business in Ghana in 1957 under the trading name of Nestlé Products (Gh) Limited with the importation of Nestlé products such as milk and chocolates.
Mr Semenyo said in 1968, it was incorporated as Food Specialties (Gh) Limited to manufacture and market locally well-known Nestlé brands an in 1987 it became Nestlé Ghana Limited producing Ideal Milk and Milo at the Tema factory.
The factory, he stated had since developed and now produced carnation milk, chocolim, chocomilo, cerevita, cerelac and Nescafe that was sold locally and a small faction exported to neighbouring West Africa countries.
He stated that the company continued to sponsors the awards, because it believed that education was a powerful medium through which children could develop the young ones to become meaningful participants in society
Mr Eric Sikakye, an Educational Coordinator from the Eastern Region said the exposure had boosted the aspiration of the student especially those who aspired to take up positions in the industrial and manufacturing sector.
“Looking at where the students are coming from, they count it all joy because only few of their peers get the opportunity to visit such places,” he added.
He hoped that honours would have positive influence on the lives of the students, instigating in them a sense of discipline and hard work.
The awards were instituted in 1993 to offer scholarships to deserving Ghanaian Basic Education Certificate Examination graduands and they are offered to 20 students from the 10 administrative regions of Ghana, comprising 10 girls and 10 boys.
This year’s award ceremony would be held on March 1, at the International Conference Centre.
