Berekum (B/R), Feb. 25, GNA - Dr. Kwabena Twum-Nuamah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East on has urged the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to develop the country’s untapped tourism potentials to earn enough revenue to boost the national economy.
He noted that the essential factor was for the GTA to develop the tourism and the hospitality industry to meet international standards to be attractive to both locals and foreigners since the sector had the needed capacity to generate foreign income that could facilitate holistic national development.
Dr Twum-Nuamah said this when he addressed the 2018 Brong-Ahafo Regional Tourism Awards Night held at Berekum in the Bono Region.
The ceremony, which was the 13th, was on the theme: “Celebrating Our Heritage”.
The ceremony covered categories, which included accommodation, catering and travel services.
He reminded the staff of the GTA and workers of the entire tourism sector to remain committed and work hard for the industry to thrive, saying, that would contribute greatly to both job and wealth creation for economic stability.
In a speech read on his behalf, Mr. Evans Opoku-Bobie, the Regional Minister said the purpose of the tourism industry was to serve humanity and therefore, called for dedicated services to always prevail in the daily operations of the operators and workers of that sector.
He said “Ghana remains the home for the global African family”, hence, the need for the GTA to position itself to ensure quality services to attract non-Africans and Africans in the Diaspora into the country.
This, Mr. Opoku-Bobie said was because the government has declared 2019 as “the year of returns and a landmark year commemorating the 400 years anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the United States”.
Mr. Opoku-Bobie announced that the country could receive about 500, 000 visitors from across the globe this year to celebrate the aforementioned anniversary with Ghanaians and stressed the historic significant occasion would also represent a unique opportunity for the country to cement its pan-African leadership.
