Shail-Hills, Feb. 22, GNA - Employees of Afcons Infrastructure Limited, builders of the 80 kilometers single gauge Tema to Akosombo railway line, has called off their four day sit down strike.
The workers, numbering over 200, on Friday morning resumed their normal duties after officials from the Labour Office, the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), third party contractors, AFCONS management and the P4olice settled on a truce on Thursday.
Mr. Eric Adelaquaye, Head, Industrial Relations Department, TUC addressing the workers after the meeting, instructed them to resume work whilst the union officials mediated with management to get all their grievances addressed.
Mr Adelaquaye assured the workers that they had the right to collective bargaining as the law stipulates, therefore TUC would ensure their rights were not curtailed.
Mrs. Comfort Agambaa, General Secretary, General Construction Manufacturing and Quarry Workers Union of TUC, on her part, announced that all necessary documentation needed to fast track the registration of workers with their preferred unions was ready.
She assured the workers that the registration process would commence immediately work at the site begun adding that neither management nor the third party contractors would victimize them for embarking on the strike.
Mr. Rexford Asubonteng, Tema Metro Director, National Labour Commission (NLC), also urged the workers to contact the Commission with their grievances.
Forty-one police personnel from the Dodowa District Police Command, led by Chief Superintendent Patrick Kwapong, Dodowa District Police Commander, were positioned at the site to maintain law and order during the strike.
