Forikrom (B/E), Feb. 21, GNA - Nana Kwaw Adams, the Executive Director of Abrono Organic Farming Project (ABOFaP) has advised farmers to apply new technologies in the fight against fall-army worms (FAWs) to prevent attack on maize and vegetables.
Nana Adams gave the advice in a post-workshop interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Forikrom in the Techiman Municipality of Brong-East Region.
The 12-week training workshop on organic farming practices was organised by ABOFaP for 20 female farmers drawn from 10 communities in the Techiman Municipality.
It educated the women farmers against the use of inorganic fertilisers and other chemicals in their farming activities instead of using organically-prepared fertilisers produced from natural waste matter.
Nana Adams mentioned a mixture of squeezed liquid from Neem tree leaf, wood ash, pepper and onion which have been identified as effective repellent of pests like FAW and very potent to eradicate them and others that attacked shallow-rooted crops’ diseases.
He urged farmers to sprinkle hand-full of ash around seedlings when planted or immediately after transplanting to secure them from pests and diseases and attack.
Nana Adams, an organic farmer and also ‘Twafohene’ of Forikrom stressed the need for members of ABOFaP to intensify their education so that farmers would be abreast with effectiveness of the technology.
