Accra, Feb. 13, GNA - Knauf, a market leader in design of living spaces, has opened a new training centre in Ghana to offer theoretical and practical knowledge/skills training for architects, civil engineers and crafts men on building sites.
The centre was opened by the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr Gerd Müller, together with Isabel Knauf, Member of the Knauf Group Management Committee, and Christiane Laibach, Chairperson of the Management Board of DEG – Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH, as part of the German African Business Summit in Ghana.
Inaugurating the facility with Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen, the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, Dr Gerd Müller, emphasised the need for skills acquisition for the Ghanaian youth to enable them benefit and participate in jobs in the construction industry.
“The young people in Ghana need training and jobs. This is the only way that they will have any prospects in their home country. This is exactly where our training centre with KNAUF comes into play. The top qualified Ghanaian professionals can then help to further build their country and to promote its development.”
On his part, Mr Kyerematen underscored the long-standing mutual relationship between Ghana and Germany.
He said the transfer skills to the Ghanaian youth was welcome,adding that such trainings in technology would help Ghana’s quest to rely on its own resources to stimulate development and transform the economy.
“This event is signifying a major development in the construction industry. Any country seeking to expand and grow clearly would have a need to develop the construction industry,” he said.
A member of the KNAUF Group Management Committee, Mrs Isabel Knauf, said the company was seeking to build a strong presence in the African market through training and opportunity for the locals.
“Africa is a strategical growth region for KNAUF in the coming years.
The training centres are an integral part of a successful market presence. They lay the foundation for further KNAUF investments into local production facilities.”
The new training centre will offer up to 800 training positions per year. The project is being financed by Knauf and co-financed by DEG, with funds from the develoPPP.de programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The training centre in Ghana, with an investment volume of approximately €700,000, is part of a large-scale joint training by Knauf, DEG and the BMZ in countries such as Nigeria,
Tanzania, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia.
It is planned that 12,000 people will be qualified within three years under this initiative.
