Accra, Feb. 6, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is to launch the maiden edition of the University Civic Challenge on Tuesday, February 12, in Accra, which will serve as a strategic platform to educate tertiary students.
Mrs Joyce Afutu, the NCCE Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday.
Twenty universities across the country would participate in the maiden challenge which include the Bolgatanga Technical University, Wa Technical University, Tamale Technical University, and the University of Development Studies, Tamale campus for the northern sector zone.
In the Middle Zone, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Garden City University, Sunyani Technical University and Catholic University, Fiapre, would participate.
In the Western Zone one, Takoradi Technical University, University of Mines and Technology, Ashesi University, University of Professional Studies and Accra Technical University would participate.
Western Zone Two has Ho Technical University, Islamic University, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and All Nations University.
Mrs Afutu explained that the Universities Civic Challenge emanates from the core mandate of the Commission, which includes encouraging students to learn the Constitution so they could be law abiding and become ambassadors of the Rule of Law.
“We introduced the university selection in the form of competition, which will test the knowledge that tertiary students have of the 1992 Constitution,” she said.
She added that for one to be able to play, “you need to study the Constitution and be well vexed to be able to play the digital or manual game board”.
Mrs Afutu added that the value of diligence, patriotism, respect for elders and other values would be discussed as part of the competition.
She said it was the core mandate of the Commission to educate Ghanaians on the principles of the 1992 Constitution.
“We are mandated to create awareness on the tenets of the Constitution and we execute it through various means such as organising quizzes and challenges among various institutions across the country,” she said.
The NCCE introduced the Constitution Game in 2002, which formed part of the National Annual Constitution Week celebration.
