Enchi (W/R), February 1, GNA - Eric Cobbina, a 20 year-old motor rider, has been sentenced to 24 months imprisonment in hard labour for unlawfully escaping from police custody at Boniso in the Aowin Municipality.
He pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Detective Sergeant Joseph Kwadwo Agyare, told the Enchi District Magistrate court, presided over by Mr Eric Baah Boateng, that the complainant, Detective Sergeant Hackman Richard Addae is a police officer stationed at Boniso while the convict resides in Jema.
He said on 14 December, 2018, the convict was involved in a stealing incident and was arraigned before the same court on charges of being on that premises for an unlawful purpose, causing damage and stealing.
Mr Agyare said Cobbina pleaded guilty on all three counts and was convicted on his own plea but his sentenced was deferred and remanded into police custody at Boniso to assist the Police apprehend his accomplice who is on the run.
According to the prosecution, the complainant took the convict back to Boniso Police station and handed him over to General Corporal Richard Ampofo who was then on duty in the Charge Office and was detained in cells.
Detective Agyare said few minutes later the convict requested from the duty bearer to use the washroom.
He said the convict was brought out in handcuffs, but he quickly took to his heels and absconded into a nearby bush
Mr Agyare said the Police officer in an attempt to get hold of him fell and in the process sustained injuries and was rushed to the Boniso health center for treatment.
He said when the complainant heard that the convict had escaped from police custody, he with the help of the youth in Boniso traced and found him on that same day at around 2000 hours and re-arrested him.
