Accra, Jan. 31, GNA - Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party’s Candidate, is leading with 9,980 votes with the collation of ballots cast from 116 polling stations in the just-ended Ayawaso West Wuogon Parliamentary Constituency by-election.
Ms Alhassan is, therefore, poised to replace Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, the demised father of her children, in Parliament.
There are 137 polling stations in the Constituency with a total of 88,710 on the electoral roll. The Voter turnout has been put at a low of 10.53 per cent.
Second in line with 4,501 is Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which announced his withdrawal from the race, over a shooting incident, which happened in the candidate’s residence.
The incident, which has left seven persons being hospitalised with various degrees of injuries, spilled over to the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Primary School One A, where voting was suspended for about 45 minutes following the skirmishes.
However, the election passed off peacefully in all the other 136 Polling Stations.
The other two candidates, William Kofi Doworkpor of the Progressive People's Party, has so far bagged 89 votes, while Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana, has 17.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr David Asante Appeatu, has directed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department to speed up investigations to unravel the cause of the incident.
It reportedly involved some supporters of the NDC and some masked men wearing black T-shirts, labelled Nsc, which some suspect are security operatives.
The University of Ghana Hospital, Legon, told the GNA that it had so far seen 18 persons, who reported with various degrees of injuries. Eleven were treated and discharged, while seven were on admission for observation.
One person, who was injured in the leg by a gunshot, was referred to the 37 Military Hospital.
More than 80,000 registered voters are on the electoral roll in the Constituency, which has been a stronghold of the NPP. It has won the seat in all the elections since Ghana's Fourth Republic, except that of 1992, which it did not contest.
