Accra, Jan. 31, GNA - Voting generally closed at 1700 hours in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, where the electorate are replacing Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, whose demise in November last year, necessitated the by- election.
The election passed off peacefully in all the 137 Polling Stations, except for the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Primary School One A, where it was suspended for about 45 minutes following some skirmishes.
The situation was a spill off from the violent incident, which happened at the nearby residence of Mr Kwasi Delali Brempong, candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The shooting incident involved some supporters of the NDC and some masked men wearing black T-shirts, labelled Nsc.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr David Asante Appeatu, has directed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department to speed up investigations into the case.
The University of Ghana Hospital, Legon, told the GNA that it had so far seen 18 persons, who reported with various degrees of injuries. Eleven were treated and discharged, while seven were on admission for observation.
One person, who was injured in the leg by a gunshot, was referred to the 37 Military Hospital.
The NDC, consequently, NDC announced that it was withdrawing from the race but the Electoral Commission told the GNA that its decision could technically not hold because the election was already underway.
Four candidates are officially contesting the race. They include Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, of the New Patriotic Party and widow of the late MP, Mr William Kofi Doworkpor of the Progressive People's Party and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana.
More than 80,000 registered voters are on the electoral roll in the Constituency, which has been a stronghold of the NPP. It has won the seat in all the elections since Ghana's Fourth Republic, except that of 1992, which it did not contest.
