Sekondi (W/R), Jan. 30, GNA - Mrs Faustina Yorke Awotwi, the Western Regional Director of the Department of Children, has said imbuing in school children good morals, ethics and rightful living at the early stages was key in fighting corruption in the country.
She said children are said to pick up their habits and behaviours by age seven and educating them on pertinent social canker would help them to grow up with the knowledge that corrupt and evil practices destroyed not only the individual but the entire society.
Mrs Awotwe was speaking at the basic school debate competition organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the National Catholic Secretariat for basic schools.
The event was held to raise their consciousness on issues surrounding corruption.
Archbishop Porter "A" JHS Sekondi and Effiakuma M/A JHS were selected for the January program with Archbishop Porter"A"JHS emerging as winners of the competition.
The lead speaker Porter "A", Miss Grace Donkoh urged her peers to join in the debate of educating the society in fighting against corruption.
She also called on the Government to equip the institutions responsible for dealing with corruption in the country to enable them execute their mandate effectively.
Mr Alphonsus Arthur, the Regional Direactor of National Commission for Civil Education (NCCE), said the Commission was bent on helping the youth particularly children with quality civic information to change attitude towards the state.
Corruption, he said, is a key factor in the country's tortoise-like development, hence a comprehensive approach in solving them.
Mr Arthur said the Ghana Anti-corruption action plan has also been developed to help in the fight against the practice as the country strives to become a corruption free country.
