Accra, Jan. 29, GNA - The 2019 Sakora Championship Games, ended at Teshie in Accra, with a call on the youth to get involve in sporting activities, to enhance job and educational opportunities for a better life.
The games, was aimed at unearthing young sports men and women for the country and organized annually by Mr Felix Timean, a former national 800m and 1500m sprinter, who is known in sporting circles as "Sakora" and based in the US.
The teams competed in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800, 1500m, 4x100m and 4x400 (men) and (women), shot put, discus and weightlifting.
Some of the athletes were from St Louis Senior High School and Islamic Senior High School both in Kumasi, Future Professionals Athletics Club; keep fit clubs, Future Professionals Athletics Club, and other athletes from the Greater Accra Region.
The event, which took place at the Teshie Salem Park, was officiated by the Past Athletes Association of Ghana led by their President, Mr Agbo Kitcher.
Mr Timean said, he would continue to organize the games as his contribution towards sports to nature young athletes for the country to raise high the flag of Ghana in athletics in future.
He said no matter what one’s family background was, either poor or rich the youth could make headway in life through sporting activities and also help escape from social vices.
“Sports open chances to connect with influential people who can make things work in one’s journey to life while it also brings about discipline in one’s life. I was from a poor home but because of athletics I was able to go to secondary school on scholarship,” he said.
Mr Timean encouraged the participants not to rest on their oars but should continue to work hard to achieve their ultimate goal in sports, saying; “am sure something good would come out of your efforts as you run in the scorching sun.”
“You guys have done well for participating in the games. Without you there would be no Sakora Championship, I thank you all,” he said.
The participants who came first, second and third in the various fields of sports received medals and undisclosed cash prizes.
They are as follows; 400m women: 1st - Grace Kombetto, 2nd - Jennifer Tenenjotop and 3rd - Gloria Agyaponmaa; 400m men: 1st - Ibrahim Muhammed, 2nd - Christian Attee Yeboah, and 3rd - Benjamin Adjetey; 200m men: 1st - Bright Wilson, 2nd - Richard Nartey, 3rd - Gabriel Dugbatey; 200m women: 1st - Rukaya Bontie, 2nd - Vida Ayiglo, and 3rd - Rachel Adjei.
Others are; 1500m women: 1st - Precious Nyarko, 2nd - Adidas Issaka, and 3rd - Family Abdulai; 1500m men: 1st - Philip Atitsogbui, 2nd - Rmazy Oaksey, 3rd - Anthony Puplampu; 100m men: 1st - Solomon Hammond, 2nd - Bright Wilson, and 3rd - Gabriel Dugbatey; 100m women: 1st - Rukaya Bontie, 2nd - Vida Ayiglo, 3rd - Diamond Kusime; 800m women: 1st - Grace Kombetto, 2nd - Fadilatu Abdulai, and 3rd - Amida Issaka.
The rest are; 800m men: 1st - Philip Atitsogbui, 2nd - Isaq Martei, and 3rd - Anthony Puplampu; discus men: 1st - David Hesse, 2nd - Raman Semeglo, 3rd - Isaac Laryea; discus women: 1st - Felicia Adumuah, 2nd - Patience Boahimaa, 3rd - Grace Kombetto; shot putt men: 1st - Kobby Asante, 2nd - Benjamin Adjetey, 3rd - Raman Semeglo; shot put women: 1st - Patricia Boahimaa, 2nd - Sarah Nanbey, and 3rd - Jennifer Tenenjotop.
