Koforidua, Jan 27, GNA - Over 60-year-old Public toilets in the New Juaben south municipality have been pull down to make way for new ones in an effort to improve upon sanitation and hygiene in the area.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive Mr Isaac Apau-Gyasi, the Assembly was in collaboration with Ghana First, a specialized company in toilet facilities, to provide about 23 new public toilets in communities in the Koforidua township whiles all old ones would be pulled down.
Already five of such toilets have been pull down whiles construction had started at betom, Srodai, Ohemaa park and the railway station.
Disclosing this at a meeting with selected media personnel in Kofoidua, he noted that some of the toilets facilities had been constructed over 60 years and had since not undergone any renovation posing danger to the health of people around and sanitation in general.
Asked why the focus was not on household toilets rather, the MCE explained that most of the indigenous communities in the municipality had challenges with space and proper planning to make way for the construction of septic tanks.
He also indicated that the project would be extended to all the old markets as part of the upgrading of the markets’ infrastructure mentioning Juaben Serwa and the Zongo markets.
The construction of the new toilets is a sigh of relief to many residents in Koforidua particularly Betom, Srodai, Ohema park and the railway station area, because the public toilets serve hundreds of households and had become death trap with many fearing an explosion.
