Accra, Jan. 24, GNA - Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, the Director of Communications of Melcom Group of Companies, has advised Disc Jockeys (DJ) in the country to build their brands for the local market.
He noted that the local market could absorb the capacities that the DJs had as there were so much entertainment opportunities that they could be explored.
Mr Avenorgbo made these remarks in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of the 2019 edition of Ghana DJ Awards Cypher in Accra.
The event was organised by Mercury Republic, organisers of Ghana DJ Awards and DJ Cypher, and hosted by Melcom Group of Companies.
A DJ Cypher is a short display of disc jockeying talent from an incredibly wide range of DJs.
Among DJs who exhibited their skills on the turntable include DJ Switch, DJ Vyrusky, DJ Putin, DJ Gospol, DJ Kelvin and DJ Mpesempese; whereas, Kuami Eugene also thrilled the audience with a splendid performance.
Mr Avenorgbo advised the DJs to be careful about drinking and lifestyles that could harm them and, most importantly, strictly abide by morality.
He, therefore, advised DJs not to be carried away by fame, but concentrate on building their capacities to operate within the local market.
“Back in the days we did not have internet, we were not on social media yet we pulled the crowd, so keep your cool”.
He narrated that he started as an amateur DJ 50 years ago and grew step by step to become a professional.
Mr Mercury Quaye, the Chief Executive Officer of Mercury Republic, told the GNA that since the inception of the Ghana DJ Awards there had been lots of changes within the disc jockeying industry as most DJs were building brands, being recognised, and crossing boarders to perform to bigger audiences.
He said the Ghana DJ Awards had a number of programmes preceding the main event like pub tours and campus events; however, the Cypher aimed at giving people the opportunity to appreciate the art as it was sometimes difficult explaining what disc jockeying was all about.
Mr Quaye said this year’s Ghana DJ Awards on the theme: “Party in Ghana,” had the objective to get the attention of people from other parts of the world to come to Ghana to see how the people party.
He stated that partnering with Melcom as host of this year’s Cypher was because the Company had, over the years, sold disc jockeying products, which would help Melcom get the attention of DJs and the public who love music by DJs.
He said he was hopeful that the art of disc jockeying would develop to the extent that lots of DJs would become faces of brands.
