Aflao, Jan. 18, GNA – Kossi Fedji, Togolese, member of a notorious motor bike snatching syndicate operating in both Togo and Ghana, has been jailed 10 years by an Aflao Circuit Court.
Fedji, alias Culture, aged 21, pleaded guilty to both conspiracy and robbery and the court jailed him five years on each count to run consecutively.
Fedji was nabbed when he returned to the crime scene, not too long after a robbery but was identified by the victim.
His accomplices, Meme Akpaglo, 29, and Agbesi Afademor, 24, pleaded not guilty to both counts and were remanded in police custody.
A fourth person, Edem Kpoti, alias Gakpovi, 26, a trader was also remanded in police custody to reappear after pleading not guilty to dishonestly receiving a stolen property.
Mr. Michael Akemo, a Detective Police Inspector told the court presided over by Mr. Ali Baba Abature, that all four persons reside in Aflao, while the complainant, Kossivi Hometowou, a Togolese, live in Lome.
He said about 1930 hours on December 17, last year, Fedji, Akpaglo and Afademor entered Lome with the intent to rob riders of their bikes, but found the environment charged with heavily armed security personnel because of the run up to that country’s recent parliamentary elections.
The Prosecution said they therefore changed their plan and decided to use Afademor to engage a rider for his services, lure such rider to Ghana and then rob him.
Mr Akemo said the slot finally fell on the complainant who was on his normal rounds with his bike valued at 495,000 CFA, the equivalent of GH¢4,257.00
He said Fedji and Akpaglo, who were riding on their operational bike, overtook the complainant’s bike at Duta in Ghana, where Afademor directed the complainant to stop.
The Prosecution said as the complainant stopped, Fedji alighted from his bike and rushed on the complainant brandishing a machete and with support from Afademor forcibly took the complainant’s bike along with his bag strapped on his waist containing unspecified amount of money.
Mr Akemo said the complainant’s loud cry attracted the neighbourhood watch committee members and others to the scene.
He said when the complainant was narrating his ordeal to the people, Fedji returned on a motor bike to the spot to spy on the reaction of the people and their intended actions, but luck eluded him as the complainant identified him leading to his arrest.
Mr Akemo said Fedji admitted to the act and led police to arrest the other suspects.
