Accra, Jan. 17, GNA - The Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that about 70 container shops, which were stocked with assorted wares valued at many thousands of cedis have been gutted in the Wednesday night Odorna Market fire.
The fire, which started at about 2000 hours, was completely extingished at about 00:24 hours at the break of Thursday.
District Officer Ellis Okoh, the leader of the combined Fire Operation Team, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that fortunately no casualty was recorded.
He said the fire gutted mostly metal containers, but for the timely intervention and skills of the officers, the whole market would have been razed.
D.O. Okoh said the fire could have been caused by a left over fire at the market, sub-standard electrical connection or sheer recklessness.
However, a preliminary investigation would be conducted to ascertain the actual cause of the outbreak and the cost of damage.
While sympathising with the shop owners over their losses, he urged the rest, across the nation, to be mindful of fire safety measures to prevent such outbreaks.
He advised them to, on daily basis, ensure that all electrical gadgets were put off and fires quenched before leaving the markets.
The Fire Official also urged the Metropolitan Assembly to be more alert and ensure that traders adhered to the safety measures.
Meanwhile, traders, residents and commuters in the area have expressed their anguish and sadness about the chronic market fires and the related high levels of destruction to
property.
