Accra, Jan. 12, GNA- The Perbi Cubs Library Services, a community-based library resource, has held an interactive writing workshop for pupils to empower them with the skills of writing.
The workshop brought together almost 100 pupils from some private schools in Accra and it is aimed at providing a platform for thought expression through discussion and creative writing for pupils.
Madam Stella Obese-Jecty, the General Manager of Perbi Cubs Library Services, told the Ghana News Agency that the workshop was necessitated by the falling standard of good writing among the current generation of pupils and students.
She said the workshop is intended to tackle the issue of dwindling standards of good English writing among pupils and students across the country due to the short hand writing on social media and through text messages.
She said pupils and students’ essay writing were now filled with unpardonable errors and tackling it from the younger generation was the ideal way to rescue the situation.
Madam Obese-Jecty said the workshop was the first of its kind from the Perbi Cubs Library Services and that it would be continued on a quarterly basis to ensure that the aim was achieved.
Ms Vereene Govia, a Creative Writing Instructor, took the pupils through a discussion on the differences between journals and diaries, urging them to adopt the habit of writing down their life experiences and imaginations.
She and Mr Gideon Sarpong, a writing enthusiast, serving as resource persons took the pupils through variety of exercises aimed at assisting the pupils to appreciate the value of reading and writing.
Mr Sarpong said it is important for the younger generation to appreciate the value of journaling as it helps to record the experiences of their lives and avoid past mistakes to make life better.
During the discussion, it became an argument among the pupils that diaries were for females while journals were for male but the facilitators explained to them that writing down life experiences were not gender specific and that every personality had life experience to share.
The facilitators took the pupils through the essence collaborative writing urging them to try and interrogate other writers’ works by appreciating it from their point of view.
