Accra, Jan. 9, GNA - Mr Kwasi Amoako Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways has expressed satisfaction at the rate and quality of work at the various footbridges along the Madina-Adentan highway.
He has also given the assurance that it would be completed on schedule.
“I am happy and impressed with the rate of speed and the progress of work. Some of the contractors I have seen working day and night and this is commendable. We are passionate about this project and we want it to complete,” he said.
Briefing the media after a tour to the area on Wednesday, Mr Atta, gave the assurance that, by April this month, all the six-foot bridges would be completed as scheduled.
As part of the tour, the Minister who was accompanied by Mr Anthony Karbo, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways and the heads of agencies under the ministry also visited uncompleted projects including; Asofan
Pedestrian knockdowns on the road last year compelled some residents to demonstrate against the authorities, which resulted in the blockade of the highway and burning of car tyres to press home their demand for the completion of the footbridges.
Government heeded to the request and awarded contracts to six companies to complete the footbridges.
Mr Atta explained that the completion of the project was a high priority of government, stating that, “Government does not want anyone to even lose a drop of blood or a soul on this road again. Everyone has a contribution to make towards the realisation of government transformational agenda”.
He expressed the hope that pedestrians would use the footbridges when completed saying, “There are many instances in this country, where some recalcitrant pedestrians prefer to cross the road instead of using the footbridges.”
Mr Atta appealed to drivers and pedestrians to cooperate with the contractors undertaking the project and advised drivers to reduce the speed.
Mr Solomon Ayie, Site Engineer for Feekans Limited said the work was progressing as scheduled and that all stakeholders especially the residents were cooperating and waiting for the project to be completed.
“In the course of the work, we realised that it will affect the electricity pylons, but they have visited the site and have assured that they will relocate the lines.”
