Agorvie (V/R), Jan. 9, GNA – The Agorvie Youth for Sustainable Development (AY4SD), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) at Agorvie-Weta in the Ketu North Municipality in the Volta Region has been launched.
The theme for the launch was; “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Leaving no one behind.”
The organisation was initially started as Agorvie Youth Association in 2012, but was transformed in 2018 to reflect its orientation towards sustainable development.
It is aimed at impacting climate-smart agriculture, forestry, environment and biodiversity, quality education, youth volunteerism, gender, livelihood empowerment, peace, unity and security.
Mr Agbota Achagli, Deputy General Services Manager of Cocoa Research Institute and the chairman of the occasion said, issues about sustainable development was everyone’s concern and urged the people to put their shoulder to the wheel.
Mr Emmanuel Sena Gohoho, the Deputy Executive Director of the AY4SD in a speech, noted that community organisation, volunteerism, youth and collective actions were catalytic resources for development, hence the NGO’s determination to energise the youth to see development as a responsibility and not a right to be demanded from the central government.
The NGO under its AY4SD project dubbed: “Innovative Climate Environmental Assignment” donated a mower to the Agorvie Basic School to curb the use of cutlass by the students to weed the compound.
Dr James Klutsey Avedzi, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North and also the Second Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament commended the youth for their effort to promote sustainable development and called for support from stakeholders towards the realisation of the SDGs by 2030.
He called for unity among the youth groups as an enabling factor to achieve the set goals and objectives of the AY4SD.
Torgbui Mlapah IV, the Chief of Agorvie-Weta noted the self-help spirit of the Agorvie citizenry and urged the members of AY4SD to work relentlessly in mobilising resources to champion the development of the area.
Mr Jonathan Goka, the Coordinator for Kasa Initiative – Ghana said NGOs were complementing government’s efforts towards sustainable development and therefore it was important they were supported to engage local authorities in planning development in their communities.
Other NGOs like; the Youth Advocate Ghana and members of National Civil Society Organisations Platform on the SDGs were present at the occasion.
