Accra, Jan. 8, GNA - Egypt have won the bid to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Egypt would now replace Cameroon, who were stripped off the hosting rights by Confederation of African Football (CAF) back in December 2018.
The Executive Committee of the CAF after a meeting in Senegal on Tuesday, voted overwhelmingly for the North African country, as they defeated their sole hosting rivals South Africa.
Egypt polled 16 out of 18 votes, with only one vote going to South Africa with the remaining voting country abstained.
The seven times African Champions have already qualified for the expanded version of the AFCON scheduled to take place from 15 June to 13 July, 2019.
The Pharaohs last hosted the continental football showpiece in 2006, where they defeated Ivory Coast on penalties in the finals to win the competition.
