Accra, Dec. 14, GNA - Madam Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) on Friday charged the Millennium Development Authority’s (MiDA) Gender and Social Inclusion (GSI) Unit, to amplify the Power Compact’s Gender- related activities to promote public awareness.
The Minister, who is also as the Member of Parliament for the Agona West Constituency, lauded the efforts being made to enhance gender access to energy in Ghana in the implementation of the Power Compact Programme.
This was during a meeting with Officials of MiDA, at the Gender Ministry to congratulate the Minister on her appointment and also present the GSI’s activities.
Present at the meeting were Dr. Afisah Zakariah, the Chief Director at the MoGCSP and officials from MiDA: Dr. Cherub Antwi-Nsiah, the Director of the GSI Unit, Ms Pamela Djamson-Tettey, the Director of Communication and Outreach, Ms Ellen Dzah and Ms Martha Ofori, both Gender and Social Inclusion Officers.
The Minister lauded the Power Compact’s Internship and Mentoring Programme for female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Courses in Tertiary, Technical and Vocational Institutions.
Dr. Antwi-Nsiah thanked the Minister for her pledge to continue supporting MiDA’s efforts at mainstreaming Gender in the implementation of the Compact Programme.
She also praised the Ministry for collaborating with and supporting the implementation of the Compact’s Social and Gender Inclusion Plan (SGIP).
She said the SGIP was designed to serve as an Operational and Monitoring tool to ensure that Gender and Social Inclusion principles were integrated into the detailed design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Compact Projects.
The Plan was used by MiDA, Implementing Entities (IEs) including MoGCSP, and other Programme Stakeholders on the Compact Programme.
The Ghana Power Compact Programme, funded with a grant of US498.2 million, provided by the United States Government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), is being implemented by MiDA on behalf of the Government of Ghana.
The five year Programme, which became effective on September 6, 2016, is funding investments in Ghana’s Power distribution sector aimed at addressing constraints to the supply of adequate and reliable power.
The Compact Projects have been designed to address the attendant socio-economic and gender issues that are related to electric power supply in Ghana.
