Nyakrom (C/R), Dec. 6, GNA - The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) would re-launch HIV and AIDS awareness programmes in the Central Region to involve the youth.
Mrs Cynthia Morrison, the sector Minister and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West said this when she paid a courtesy call on Okofo Katakyi Nyarkoh Eku X, the Omanhene of the Nyakrom Traditional Area of the Central Region.
She said her visit was to express her gratitude to the Omanhene and the Divisional Chiefs in Agona West for their prayers and support for her to be appointed as Minister by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Mrs Morrison said after the re-launch, the youth would be given training before they embarked on house-to-house campaign to create the awareness of the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
She said the AIDS menace, which has no cure, was still in existence and there was the need for the people to be sensitised against indiscriminate sex.
She said according reports the disease was high in the Central Region and called on the queen mothers in the Agona West to take initiative to educate the young girls and boys to abstain from premarital sex.
The Minister said the usage of the social media and the internet had exposed teenagers to early sex and asked parents and guardians to be vigilant and monitor the movement of their children.
Mrs Morrison urged opinion leaders and stakeholders to help carry out sex education in the basic and senior high schools, social clubs, and keep fit clubs, to curb the spread of the disease.
Other areas the Minister visited were Agona Nkum, Upper Bobikuma, Lower Bobikuma, Kwamang and Agona Abodom to thank the chiefs.
Okofo Katakyi Nyarkoh Eku X, the Omanhene of Nyakrom Traditional Area, expressed gratitutde to President Akufo-Addo for the appointment of the MP from their area as the Minister.
He expressed the hope and trust that Mrs Morrison would work hard to improve the living conditions of the people.
At Nkum, Nana Nyarkoh Etuah III, the Obaatan of Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, urged the Minister to be focused and ignore people who peddled lies, in order to bring development to Agona West.
He assured the Minister of their continuous support to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the rolling out of social interventions to support the poor and the needy in society.
According to the Minister, the Paramount Chiefs and his subjects never turned their back against her but rather stood firm behind her before, during and after the Vetting Committee offered its final approval to her appointment.
She stated that through the votes given to her in 2016 elections that had brought this great honour to her and the Agona West as a whole, and pledged to work extra hard to bring success and glory to the NPP government, Ghana and Agonaman as a whole.
The MP said it would be unfair and not gratifying for her not to come to the palaces to offer thanks and urged the chiefs and the people in Agona West to rally behind President Nana Akufo-Addo to succeed.
