Saviefe - Gborgame (V/R), Dec. 6, GNA - Mr Francis Asong, a member of the coalition on the Right To Information (RTI) bill, has said Ghana would experience unprecedented development when the bill was passed into law.
He said the law would deepen transparency, democracy and accountability, which would eventually promote rapid socioeconomic development.
Mr Asong said this at a day's forum on the bill in the Ho West District of the Volta Region where the public were reminded on the need to get involved in demanding its passage in Parliament.
Mr Patrick Kudzo Asiedu, Deputy Regional Director, National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), said Article (1) of the 1992 constitution states that the sovereignty of the country resided in the people, hence information gathering and sharing is a fundamental human right of the people.
He said access to information was very vital because it empowered the citizens to actively participate in the decision and the governance processes of the country.
Mr Asiedu said citizens could only demand effective accountability from duty bearers if they had access to “maximum information which is very vital for societal development”.
He said the RTI bill would reduce the level of corruption in the country because it would enable the citizens to check and question the activities of government and other duty bearers, saying the passage of the bill into law would be a plus for the country's democratic development.
The forum was sponsored by Open Society Initiative For West Africa with support from National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative.
