Adjei-Kojo, (GAR) Nov. 28, GNA - An Adolescent Health Club has been inaugurated at the Tetteh Ocloo State School of the Deaf to serve adolescents in and around Adjei–Kojo in the Tema West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Dr. John Yabani, Tema Metropolitan Director of Health, Mrs Judith Amu Mensah, Deputy Metropolitan Nursing Director, said since its inception, the Adolescent Health Programme in 2007, has provided adolescent health services to schools, communities, and in the four public health facilities which included Tema Polyclinic and Tema General within the Tema area.
She further added that, through the School Setting Programme, the health directorate in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Education office had inaugurated 18 Adolescent Health clubs in some 18 schools within the Metropolis including Our Lady of Mercy Senior High School, CHEMU Senior High School, Tema Senior High School and Manhean Senior High School.
Mrs Mensah noted that, the total number of adolescent beneficiaries as captured by the Metro Health Directorate stood at 106,106 and called on stake holders to consider making issues concerning adolescents their priority.
Chief Inspector Sabina Ama Blay, Officer in charge of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in the Tema Metropolis, advised adolescents to report any form of abuse they suffer from parents, relatives, teachers or any person to the Police for the necessary action to be taken.
She cautioned the adolescents to avoid bad company and focus on their education to become responsible adults in the future.
The Chief Inspector also called on religious bodies to speak against maltreatment and abuses which adolescents suffer within their closets.
The Adolescent Health Clubs which operate under Adolescent Health and Development Programme of the Ministry of Health, provide counselling and support to adolescents on sexual and reproductive health issues and also serve as a platform for them to share their stories and experiences free of judgment and stigmatization.
