Accra, Nov. 13, GNA – Mr Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma Central Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has donated sewing machines to some women, after undergoing a four year training in dressmaking.
The graduation ceremony was organised by the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA) in Accra.
Mr Nartey said the donation forms part of his social policy to help women to operate on their own as well as to prevent them from indulging in anti-social practices for a better future.
He told the women that, “your success would be based on how you portray yourselves to your customers and advised them to honour their obligations to their association and government.”
He noted that government was aware of its responsibility of providing the necessary opportunities and recognises the importance of the private sector as an engine of growth, hence the need to support the women with start-up kits.
Madam Jane Amerley Oku, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Janok Foundation, a community based non-governmental organisation (NGO), and sponsors of some of the women who graduated, told the GNA that, “my dream is to see the women acquiring a vocation to prevent them from anti-social practices”.
She said the sponsorship was meant to supplement government’s efforts of imparting skills to the unemployed women and the youth.
Madam Oku said every girl child has a potential and that it was the responsibility of parents to guide and nurture them to realise their talents.
In a contest, as part of the ceremony, Miss Augustina Abehadzi, won the best seamstress award of the GNTDA and received an electric sewing machine in addition to the one donated by the MP, followed by Miss Esther Acquah and Miss Mercy Opoku, both received hand sewing machines and electric irons.
