Accra, Nov. 1, GNA - Ghana will be the centre of the continent’s attention 17 days from now, when the country hosts the biggest women football competition, the Women African Cup of Nations (AWCON).
Host venues; Accra and Cape Coast looks almost set for the commencement of the 11th edition of the competition, with eight teams set to battle it out for the ultimate trophy and a qualification to the Women's World Cup in France next year.
The spot light is on host nation Ghana, who aims to win its first AWCON trophy on home soil after years of participation.
Ghana’s female national team, nicknamed Black Queens, have made ten appearances in this competition and is currently ranked 47th on the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Women’s ranking.
The Black Queen’s best feat in the competition has been in 1998,2002 and 2006 where they emerged as the runners up in each year of the competition.
With the experience of head coach, Bashiru Hayford and assistant Mercy Tagoe, who led the team in their 2018 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B success in Cote D’Ivoire, expectations are high for the team to make history.
The team, started preparations three months ago with a tour around the country to engage in friendly matches, after which they would wrap up preparations ahead of the competition with friendly matches against Zambia and Kenya.
Skipper Elizabeth Addo and her colleagues appreciate how enormous the task at hand was, but they have promised to deliver and make history.
Some exciting players to watch out for from the team includes; experienced goalkeeper, Patricia Mantey (Immigration Ladies), prolific forward Jane Ayieyam, Leticia Zikpi, Portia Boakye (Djurgadeus HF Football, Sweden), and Priscilla Okyere (ZFK Spartak Subotica, Serbia), Faustina Ampah (FC Minsk, Belarus).
The team boasts of top quality from a mixture of local and foreign players and the spirit is high in camp having under gone good preparations by far.
The Black Queens are poised to make Ghana proud by recording their first continental trophy as Ghana awaits for the rest of the continent.
